Social Responsibility
"Latin growers in the U.S. and Latin America are responsible for much of the fresh produce, ingredients and quality products that are an essential part of our world and our way of living. Supporting farmers and food producers is not only supporting the earth, but contributing to the betterment of the lives of our communities that so much need it." Michael Hurwitz, Director of Greenmarket.
At Gourmet Latino we are committed to helping improve the lives of Latin farmers and food producers around the world. We have partnered with social change organizations to support businesses and products that sustain people and the environment.

Social Partners:

Our ways to help:

- Promote the role of local farming, responsible land use, and fair-trade practices in society.
- Work with chefs and participating restaurants to source produce from local farmers during Gourmet Latino Festival week.
- Donate a portion of ticket sales to GrowNYC's (formerly the Council on the Environment of NYC) “New Farmer's Development Project”
- Create a socially responsible operation, minimizing waste in the way we produce and promote the festival.

About our social partners:

Greenmarket a program of GrowNYC (formerly the Council on the Environment of NYC), promotes regional agriculture and ensures a continuing supply of fresh, local produce for New Yorkers. GrowNYC supports farmers and preserves farmland for the future by providing regional, small-family farmers with opportunities to sell their fruits, vegetables and other farm products to New Yorkers. As part of their work, GrowNYC's “New Farmer Development Project” (NFDP) identifies, educates and supports immigrants with agricultural experience by helping them become local farmers and establish small farms in the region.

By training the next generation of regional farmers, the NFDP helps preserve local farmland and rural farm communities, strengthens farmers markets and regional food security, and expands public access to high-quality, locally grown farm products.

The NFDP was created in 2000 as a partnership between Greenmarket a program of GrowNYC (formerly the Council on the Environmnet of NYC) and Cornell Cooperative Extension's NYC Program. The project is based in New York City and supports new farmers within the city, New York's Hudson Valley and Catskill regions, New Jersey and northeastern Pennsylvania.
